MAY 7, GIANT SUNSPOT AR3664 HAS GROWN SO LARGE – it rivals the Carrington sunspot of 1859 in size and appearance. Sprawling almost 200,000 km from end to end, it is 15 times wider than Earth. You can see AR3664 through ordinary eclipse glasses with no magnification.

MAY 10 -11: CLASS-G5 GEOMAGNETIC STORM – The first of six CMEs hurled toward Earth by giant sunspot AR3664 hit our planet’s magnetic field today. The impact sparked the biggest geomagnetic storm in almost 20 years producing auroras across Europe, Asia, Mexico, and all 50 US states. Hundreds of millions of people saw the colored lights for the first time in their lives.

MAY 11: ALBERTA WILDFIRES – 11 new wildfire prompt evacuation alerts expanded near Fort McMurray and the nearby community of Saprae Creek as an out-of-control wildfire burns south of the city.

May 12: BRITISH COLUMBIA WILDFIRES – One of the largest fires burning in the province of British Columbia is the Parker Lake Wildfire. As of Sunday, the blaze had burned more than 6,100 acres. Local authorities urged the entire town of Fort Nelson to evacuate and use as few vehicles as possible in an effort to conserve fuel in the region about 400 miles east of Juneau, Alaska.

SEPT 10: EXTREME UV FLASH & FULL HALO CME – Sunspot AR3814 exploded directly facing Earth: The ultraviolet flash (category M1.2) ionized the top of Earth’s atmosphere and caused a brief shortwave radio blackout over the Pacific Ocean. Active sunspot AR3814 is crackling with solar flares and may have hurled as many as four CMEs toward Earth in the past 36 hours.

SEPT 12-13, X-CLASS FLARE & G3 CLASS GEOMAGNETIC STORM

SEPT 15-16: EUROPE FLASH FLOODING – At least eight people have died after the heaviest rain in years hit central and eastern Europe, causing flooding and widespread disruption. A slow-moving low pressure system dubbed Storm Boris dumped a month’s worth of rain onto several of Europe’s historic capitals, including Vienna, Bratislava and Prague.

SEPT 14: X-5 CLASS FLARE, EXTREME UV FLASH AND CME

SEPT 16: G4-CLASS GEOMAGNETIC STORM & CIRCUMPOLAR AURORAS

SEPT 15 – 18 POTRUGAL WILDFIRES – 20 The wildfires were a series of more than 1,000 wildfires, 128 labeled devastating, that spread through Portugal burning more than 135,000 hectares AND resulting in the deaths of at least nine people.

SEPT 18, FLASH FGLOODING ITALY – Storm Boris moved into Italy late last week, having earlier caused devastation and some of the worst floods in decades in parts of Austria, Romania, the Czech Republic and Poland. More than 1,000 people in Emilia-Romagna were forced to evacuate after floods and landslides.

On Saturday morning 121mm of rain was recorded in one hour in Wajima, and 84.5mm in Suzu. This was the heaviest rain observed in these locations since comparative data became available in 1929. Niigata and Yamagata prefectures were also affected with 16,000 people told to evacuate.

OCT 26,2024: X-CLASS DOUBLE SOLAR FLARES & CMEs

OCT 28,2024: GEOMAGNETIC STORM AND CIRCUMPOLAR AURORAS

OCT 30-31, 2024, SPANISH FLASH FLOODING: – Torrential rain caused by an isolated low-pressure area at high levels brought over a year’s worth of precipitation to several areas in eastern Spain, including the Valencian Community, Castilla–La Mancha, and Andalusia. The resulting floodwaters caused the deaths of at least 217 people and substantial property damage.

Disastrous floods have been reported throughout the history of Valencia, from the 14th century up to the contemporary period. Dec 29, 2024 – STRONG SOLAR ACTIVITY RESUMES: The quiet has broken. During the past 36 hours, sunspot 3936 has produced two X-class solar flares (X1.1 and X1.5) and a score of lesser M-flares. This morning’s X1.5-class eruption (0414 UTC) was so strong it triggered a secondary blast in sunspot 3932 more than 200,000 km away:

Dec 29-30 2024 GEOMAGNETIC STORM WATCH: A fusillade of solar activity on hurled two CMEs toward Earth. Their arrival on Dec. 31-Jan 1 could spark moderate (G2) to strong (G3) geomagnetic storms. If a strong storm materializes, Northern Lights could descend to mid-latitudes in the USA and Europe, competing with fireworks displays to start the New Year. Added:

Dec 31, 2024 – THE CME HAS ARRIVED: The first of two CMEs heading toward Earth arrived at 1621 UTC. The impact does not appear potent enough to cause a strong (G3) geomagnetic storm. Instead minor (G1) to moderate (G2) storms are possible in the hours ahead.

Jan 1, 2025 – GEOMAGNETIC STORM UPDATE: 2025 is off to a good start, auroras spilled across the Arctic Circle, spreading as far south as Mexico, Colorado and Arizona during an intense geomagnetic storm. For a while, storm levels reached category G4, which is severe. The storm is subsiding now, but sky watchers should remain alert for auroras as geomagnetic activity flickers between category G1 (Minor) and G3 (Strong) for the next 12 to 24 hours.

Jan 3, 4, 2025 – THE SUN IS FLARING AGAIN – Sunspot AR3947 is sizzling with activity. Since yesterday it has produced three X-class solar flares and multiple strong M-flares. NOAA’s GOES-16 satellite recorded the extreme ultraviolet and X-ray flashes:

Jan. 4, 2024 – CME IMPACT SPARKS MINOR STORM – As predicted, a CME hit Earth’s magnetic field on (0445 UTC). The impact caused approximately 6 hours of minor G1-class geomagnetic storming. Bright auroras were mainly confined inside the Arctic Circle. Aurora alerts: SMS Text.
