CANADA WILDFIRES May 7, 2023
On June 1, more than 120 fires were ignited by lightning in just one day. The first local state of emergency was declared in Alberta and hundreds of blazes have since broken out across the country, with more than 400 active fires as of 7 June. As of October 6, 6,551 fires had burned 184,961 square kilometres or about 5% of the entire forest area of Canada. As of October 6, there were 772 wildfires active, and 346 were deemed “out of control”.
