THE MALASIA AIRLINES MYSTERY 12:41 a.m. (MYT), March 8, 2014 – Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, a scheduled passenger flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing operated by Malaysia Airlines departs Kuala Lumpur International Airport with 239 people on board. 1:19 a.m. – The cockpit responds to Malaysian air traffic control with, “Good night Malaysian three seven zero,” as the plane prepares to leave Malaysian airspace and enter Vietnamese airspace over the South China Sea. ~1:21 a.m. – The aircraft’s transponder signal disappears from civilian radar screens. Shortly afterward, Malaysian military radar shows the aircraft deviating from its planned northeast route to Beijing. It turns westward, crosses back over the Malay Peninsula, and heads northwest over the Strait of Malacca.
~2:22 a.m. – Military radar loses contact with the aircraft northwest of Penang Island. After this point, no conventional radar tracked the plane. Later satellite data indicated it continued flying for several more hours before disappearing somewhere along a southern arc in the Indian Ocean.
